About varicose veins
Varicose veins – bulging, twisted, or ropy veins which usually appear on the legs – affect nearly 60% of Americans. Varicose veins develop when valves in a vein begin to fail, allowing blood to flow backwards and put pressure on the wall of the vein. Varicose veins are a medical condition, and frequently cause pain, swelling, and inflammation. They may indicate a progressive, chronic problem, and without medical care can develop into skin ulcers or blood clots. Although varicose veins affect men and women, women are at greater risk for developing this type of vein disease. Other risk factors include heredity, pregnancy, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
About spider veins
Spider veins, blue or red web-like veins, most often appear on the legs and face when a small group of blood vessels located just below the surface of the skin become dilated. Spider veins are often simply a cosmetic concern, but they may also be a symptom of the type of underlying vein disease that causes varicose veins. At our Long Island vein clinic, we can determine whether your spider veins signal an underlying medical condition. While spider veins are not painful like varicose veins, they can be embarrassing and may keep patients from participating in activities they enjoy.
